The Department of Transportation is the Federal agency that regulates all modes of transportation as well as pipeline and hazardous materials safety in the United States. As part of this regulation, DOT requires substance abuse testing and has very specific guidelines on how, when and why this testing is completed. These guidelines are found in 49 CFR Part 40. Each agency of the Department of Transportation has agency specific guidelines that must be followed by companies and agencies as well.
